Playhouse de Mayo

PlayhouseEveryone keeps saying how insane Playhouse is and that it’s one of the top clubs in Hollywood, so obviously we had to go. One of my coworkers is quite fond of the place, so I went with somewhat high expectations. Fortunately my group was hooked up through a promoter who put us on his VIP list. Not shabby at all.

The night of Cinco De Mayo, The Everything Nice Girls and I arrive at the venue and there is a long line. Naturally we head straight the front of the line to talk to one of the promoters. We do our essential name drop to get inside and the guy looks at us and chuckles. He tells us to stand in line and that he’ll come get us. We get in line and a minute later he comes up to us. He informs us that he can get the girls in free, but that I will have to pay $20.

Now anyone who knows me knows I despise cover charges, especially if the place isn’t worth it. So I don’t. The girls get wristbands and I text our promoter friend. We get to the front of the line and the girls get inside. Luckily our friend texts me back and lets me know I need to find his friend who will mark me off the VIP list. I find the other promoter and he lets everyone know that I don’t need to pay. Sweet.

I catch up with the girls, who all hit the ladies room, and we head into the club. Playhouse has two floors, though you would not notice from first glance. When you walk in, you’ll see the restrooms to your right, then you enter the club itself. On the main floor there are two main bars. One to your right, which is at one end of the club, and one bar in the middle. Along the sides of the club there are a tables for bottle service with a DJ and dance floor on the opposite end of the clubs.

I hit the middle bar and the girls decide to hit the dance floor while I chat up one of the bartenders.  Moments later the girls circle back towards the bar and I buy them drinks. I guess I made a good impression with the bartender because she gave us free shots as well. Nice. I close out my tab and realize that each drink ran about $11 to $12. Ridiculous, even by Hollywood’s standards.

I shrug as I remember that I’ve blown a LOT more money on a given night buying women drinks. At least present company consisted of friends. Eventually after a round or two, we hit an incredibly packed dance floor. From all the hype, I expected  a massive dance floor. In fact the dance floor is a small percentage of the actual club. Also the it isn’t on the same level as the rest of the club, but a few feet lower than everything else. This means that you have to go up and down a few steps to get in and out of the dance floor, hence the cramping. In front of the dance floor (which is also on the other side of the club) there is a DJ, which a large screen behind him. At the time the screen only had dancing light….seems like a waste of a screen. Playhouse could benefit from a sick Video DJ like Jimmy G in my opinion.

We ascend the stairs back to the bar. At this point there are far more people in the club. At this point one of the bouncers points out that there is a second floor. Cool. So we head upstairs and find ourselves in more of a lounge type setting with more tables and elbow room. Though I didn’t care to get a drink up here, I did appreciate the amount of space. A few of sat on the lounge couches while Ms. Craig got hit on by a few wasted losers.

Eventually we went back downstairs to the dance floor. We did see a live show that night from a new up and coming group, My Hero. You can hear the song they performed at Sneak’s VIP. The performance was pretty cool. Afterward go-go dancers started dancing next to the bouncer and on top of he middle bar.

That was pretty much it. Eventually we all decided to call it a night, even though the club was still going. Apparently the Playhouse stays open until 4am.  It wasn’t bad, may come back to this one.

Fred 62

Eat Fred’s or Be Dead!

Fred 62

Review and Overview: This is a Cool Spot

Cuisine: Diner (Hip)

  • Deal

Fred 62 has been a hip late night eating spot for years. The place never closes, which make sense because it always appears to be packed! The restaurant seamlessly blends hip trendy décor with your classic diner. The food here is fantastic to say the least and the crowd is always a hodge podge of people. Expect to see clubbers, college kids, rockers, couples, and all other assortment of patrons here.

  • Food

The food here is excellent. Expect to see your favorite diner menu options, just a lot more of them. The menu does a great job of providing an assortment of choices. For example the breakfast options (like any diner worth its weight in gold) are fantastic. In fact the breakfast alone is divided into SEVEN overarching menu categories. Practically half of the menu is just Fred’s breakfast items!  Also like any good diner, it’s always worth saving room for dessert. There are several categories of food to choose from, each with even MORE food options. I really can’t stress how large the menu is here. Check it out for yourself!

  • Price ($$)

Though they used to be much cheaper before, the prices at Fred’s aren’t terrible. Expect a bill of $20 easy. Regardless of how much you pay, there is a 99.9% chance you will be full when you leave the table. The rule of thumb here is to go in a group. There will usually be people who can’t finish their entire meals anyway.

  • Parking

There is a parking lot across the street behind the restaurant. Otherwise you’ll need to find parking on the street, which is common in the Los Feliz area.

  • Staff

All of the staff here are friendly, funky, spunky characters. I don’t think I have ever had an issue with any of them.

Information:

In the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, it’s between Los Feliz and Hollywood Blvd on Vermont Ave.

Our History:

Simply put, a bunch of us used to come here a lot back in our college days. The night typically consisted of a late night event in Hollywood followed by hitting Fred 62 before heading back to campus. Fred’s of course was always a good decision. We’ve been back periodically and the place still has the crazy funky feel we have enjoyed for years.

Why It’s Cool:

It’s trendy done right. This place definitely gives you a unique vibe that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

16 Beers…

So usually our group would go out during the week and drink a ton! We did this by playing the game 7-11-Dubs (will explain the rules at another time). Just know that this particular game involves a group people (in our case 10 or so), dice, and chugging a crap ton of beer (10-20 a person).

However there was one such night when we had half of the normal amount of people. I remember it (partially) like it was yesterday. For whatever reason, our loyal group had been whittled down to five guys. That night our group consisted of Chef, Poker, Steak (Chef’s housemate), and Big Cat. Big Cat was somewhat the catalyst for the night because he is an old frat brother of Steak and I (and a crazy drinker). On top of that all five guys in the group are raging drinkers, so the night was already doomed.

We get to the bar, whip out the dice, order a heft round of beers, and get to it. This is where the night gets hazy. I remember hot bartenders dancing….I remember making a towering wall of empty beer cups…..I remember Big Cat knocking over a full cup of beer in an attempt to knock down said wall of cups. Long story short, by the end of the night we had consumed about 16 beers…each.

Anyway, we decide to call it a night because it was getting late and I had work the next day. We close our tabs and Chef goes to the bathroom. Chef returns and we promptly walk outside.

Outside we hear, “Hey, Hey! You Can’t Do That! You Can’t Do That!” We all turn around to some girl pointing her finger at our group. “You can’t do that! You can’t just touch me on my side and walk away!”

It’s then we notice that she is not pointing at our group, but at Chef. Singling out the now stunned member of our crew, she accuses him of:

Girl: You touched me on my side! You can’t just touch me on my side and walk AWAY!

Chef: Huh?

Crazy Girl: That’s right! You touched me on the side and walked off!

Big Cat: Hahah what? No he didn’t. Get out of here!

Crazy Girl: Don’t tell me to go away! He touched me on my side!

Chef: HUH?!

Steak: What are you talking about?

P-Tyme: How do you know it was him? Did you see him do it?

Crazy Girl: YEAH

P-Tyme: Are you sure?

Crazy Girl: I dunno, maybe it was YOU!

Now here is the major flaw in her argument. I’m a black guy wearing black at the time, and Chef is a white guy wearing white.

P-Tyme: Huh?

Chef: HUH?!

Steak: …………Chef is GAY!!!

We all turn abruptly and look at Steak…then shrug and go with it.

Steak: That’s right…He’s gay!

P-Tyme: Y-Yeah…

Poker: We tried to tell you…

Big Cat: HAhahHaha

Crazy Girl: WHATEVER!

The girl storms off leaving a short, drunk cholo standing in front of us.

Cholo: Hey man, look it’s all good man. It cool man, it’s cool.

We loom over the small guy.

Big Cat: Get out of here man….

The cholo walks away.

Chef: What the hell man!

P-Tyme: That….was…something….

Chef: What the hell!

Poker: Well I’m going to get water to help me sober up…

Steak: Yeah me too…

The two of them walk back into the bar and suddenly cops descend and start detaining people. No point in trying to leave now. Chef, Big Cat, and I watch as the cops do their thing. We try to look as sober as possible. Steak walks out and he sees the situation. Then Poker walks out.

I look at Poker and give him the “ixnay” signal not to say anything drunk in front of the cops. Poker looks at me,  then looks past our group, and unblinking proceeds to walk past silently. Puzzled we watch him walk down the street until we literally can’t see him anymore. We didn’t hear from him the rest of the night

Eventually the cops found whoever they were looking for an hour later and left.

P-Tyme: Fuck! I got work in the morning! Damnit, we could’ve been outta here by now! That stupid girl messed me over!

Chef: What the hell was that about?!

Steak: Crazy bitches man…

Big Cat:……Guys….where’s Poker?

The Highlands Hollywood

The Highlands

More of a tourist trap…

  • Venue Type: Club

Overview & Review

Highlands is literally the most typical Hollywood club there is. What does that mean? Expect a line, expect a cover, expect rude bouncers, and expect your night to be somewhat frustrating if you encounter all of these factors. Though this place can look nice, it does not make up for the typical club mumbo jumbo you will encounter.

Located on Hollywood and Highland, The Highlands is a spot you should try once, just to say that went. The venue itself is rather large because it also houses the restaurant Rise on its top floor. This creates a cool atmosphere because it is easy to venture between both the restaurant and club.

The Door

  • Line

While driving down Hollywood Blvd, you may notice a line wrapping around the Hollywood Plaza. There is a good chance that the line is for Highlands. Lines are typical in Hollywood and will become your best friend unless you know a promoter. Highlands is no different.

  • Cover

Expect a cover here ranging from free to $20 for the ladies and $15 to $20 for the guys. Again, it’s Hollywood and you should expect to pay unless you know someone with a hook up.

  • Bouncers

What is most annoying about The Highlands is how annoying the bouncers can be. Now there is something to be said about the clientele as well. The Highlands attracts a lot of different people. The bouncers generally have to deal with a lot of guff and therefore do not care to differentiate the pleasant people from the idiots. Depending on the bouncer, expect to get hassled unnecessarily. Some of these guys take there jobs far too seriously.

The Venue

This is a large place, but you will probably spend your time in either Rise or The Highlands proper. Rise is at the top of the venue and overlooks Hollywood. It has the feeling of a lounge and can only be accessed via the interior elevator or stairs of The Highlands. This area of the club is definitely more laid back than the rest, a good place to chill when you need to slow down a bit. There are plenty of tables and a few separate rooms as well. There is also a larger dance floor behind the bar that’s worth noting, though I believe that is usually for VIP.

    • Atmosphere & Clientele

If you go downstairs you will end up in the larger portion of the venue. Here you will find a large dance floor with a stage, go-go dancers on elevated platforms and three bars along the surrounding walls. The stage usually holds the DJ or any other performers for the night. There is an outside patio that over looks Hollywood and leads either back upstairs or to another room in the back. The back room is where Highlands has its table and bottle service (That is, if you didn’t get a bottle at Rise, which we would be a better choice)

The Highlands often has special events with DJs or hip hop artists, which can be pretty enjoyable. Let’s not forget the lovely go-go dancers moving to the beats of the DJ. However the crowd at The Highlands can overshadow these aspects and make your night feel more like a chore. It is safe to say that if go you’ll want to be sober. Fun.

    • Pricing & Parking

The Highlands is a far more expensive than it is worth. It feels more like a tourist trap, than a proper club. Unless you can find the coveted parking spaces on the street, you will most likely wind up in the underground garage of the Hollywood Plaza. There is $10 or so right there. At least there are establishments in the plaza that validate (if they are open). Then there is cover which can be $20 easily. Once you are inside, you have to consider buying drinks which are easily the normal $8 to $10 each.

    • Address

    6801 Hollywood Blvd. Suite 433
    Hollywood, CA 90028

    • Website

    http://www.thehighlandshollywood.com/

    Information

It’s right on Hollywood and Highland inside of the Hollywood Plaza on the top floor. You can’t miss it.

    Our History

We have definitely been here more times than we would have liked for a number of reasons. Though parts of each night were enjoyable, there were so many bumps in the night. The first night I went, I had some items confiscated, which of course were lost. The worst part of the night was the “way too into his job” bouncers who decided to give me the 3rd degree when I needed to reenter the venue to find a friend’s lost phone. The same bouncer gave the same headache when I need to reenter the venue to find a friend inside. It would have been understandable if I had actually left both times. Instead I merely walked outside. We’ve had people start fights with us here and we’ve have our own friends tossed out. Regardless this place always feels like more trouble than it’s worth.

    Pros

Not many. It’s a large venue in the middle of Hollywood, so everything many places are in walking distance. Sometimes the venue has live shows there that are pretty cool if you can get tickets or know one of the DJs.

    Cons

Long lines, rude bouncers, irritating crowd, and overall unnecessarily expensive.
