New Drink Recipe: Grand Slam!

Grand Slam

  • 1 part vodka
  • 1 part beer

That’s it…keep it simple, stupid!

History:
Our tough-guy buddy Army sauntered into a party we were throwing back in college. Desperate to prove his ultimate masculinity, he prompted our barkeep of the night, the Slave, to make him ‘the strongest drink you can think of’. Inspired by Dodgers catcher Russell Martin’s game-winning grand slam earlier in the night, the Slave cooked up the Grand Slam in his honor: throwing a few shots of vodka into a cup of beer, without the benefit of the lemonade that everyone else had mixed into it. Army took a sip, commented on how terrible it tasted (even accurately guessing the ingredients, to many laughs), and proceeded to down the whole thing.
Poker,
Tips:

  • Do not order this in a bar – it does not “exist” in a classical sense.
  • Do not ask a friend to make this for you – it is truly terrible.
  • Give this to your worst enemies, and laugh at their misery and pain.
  • Add lemonade and suddenly it’s tolerable, even borderline delicious!

The Verdugo Bar

Imports galore!

Verdugo Bar

Review and Overview: This is a cool spot

  • Drinks ($$-$$$)

Primarily imports are somewhat on the pricey side, but delicious. The beers are generally massive, so you won’t care as much if you happen to drop $10  on one.

  • Games

There is an outside patio in the back that is good for beer pong! Check it out, not everyone knows it’s back there.

  • Events

Not really sure if they throw events here, but then again they probably do not need events.

  • Staff

Are quite friendly and usually remember Ra and Chef due their drunken pasts. They are pretty attentive and the there are some pretty cute lady bartenders working there. Definitely a plus.

  • Parking:

Only street parking, but generally this is not difficult to find.

  • Cover/Line/Dress Code

No cover (of course) and I have never seen a line at this place. Dress code is casual, it is a hipster bar after all.

  • Recommendation

Get there earlier rather than later so that you can get a table or post up at the bar. Once the crowd comes in, finding a place for your mug will be hard to find. Also try the Bourbon County Stout (if it’s in stock), it is delicious!

  • Web Site

http://www.verdugobar.com/

  • Address

3408 Verdugo Road
Los Angeles, CA 90065

  • Phone

(323) 257-3408

Information:

Located off of Verdugo (East Verdugo) and W. Avenue 34. There is a sign outside that says “Cocktails”

Our History:

What is funny about this particular location is that Chef and Ra have there experiences with this place, while my friend House and I have ours. Regardless this was a nice change of pace from the neighborhood bars we would frequent during our college days. Chef and Ra discovered this place and became regulars to the point that the entire staff knew them. At some other point House and I hit this place in hopes of finding a new bar to hang out. At any rate, we all liked this spot.

Why It’s Cool:

The location is inconspicuous and interior is much nicer than it lets on. The bar is dark with the light coming mostly from the bar and the lamps along the wall. For such a small bar is surprisingly accommodating for patrons. There are plenty of bar stools and a wall of tables. In the back room there are lounge couches as well.

When we started coming here, we immediately noticed the long list of imported beers. Though the prices were higher than we were used to, we had no complaints. The bottles they gave us were much larger than expected.  This place was definitely a well kept secret. We had a pretty good time until the hipsters showed up.

Yes, this is a hipster bar. It is not surprising since the bar is in the Eagle Rock/Highland Park area.  Definitely not the bar I would go to talk to women. However if you are down chill with your friends, this is a cool spot.  They have a laundry list of amazing beers you can’t find in most places!

Jake’s of Pasadena

It looks like a simple burger shack…

Review and Overview: This is a cool spot

  • Drink ($-$$)

There is a decent selection here. Don’t expect the variety that you would find at other Pasadena watering holes like Barney’s or Yardhouse, but then again you don’t actually come here for the drinks ironically.

  • Food ($-$$)

This is where it all comes together. If nothing else, Jake’s is known for its superb burger selection. The choices seem limitless once you grab the “Make You Own Burger” menu.

  • Games

One word, Billiards. If you like playing pool, you’ll love Jakes. While it looks like a mediocre burger joint from the outside, Jake’s true secret lies underground. Here you will find a bar to your right and a pool hall to your left. This place is excellent for groups and does not have they dingy feeling that pool halls have. They also have beer pong, which if memory serves, you can play on request

  • Events

Events have been thrown here before, though it doesn’t appear that this happens too often. Honestly the place doesn’t need to throw events to bring in a crowd.

  • Staff

There are really only a handful of people you will notice right away, but they are all chill. The bartenders handle your orders downstairs, the servers handle your orders upstairs, and the bouncers make sure everything stay cool.

  • Parking

As with Barney’s I recommend parking in the garage on Fair Oaks and Green if you can find street parking.

  • Cover/Line/Dress Code

No cover, No line, and of course casual.

  • Web Site

http://www.jakespasadena.com/

  • Address

38 West Colorado Blvd.

Pasadena, CA 91105

  • Phone

(626) 568-1602

Information:

In the middle of Old Town Pasadena on Colorado. Can’t miss it, it’s been there since the 1940s.

Our History:

We would come to Jake’s to just hang out in a large group. Though we did this often, there was one night in particular that jumps out at me. W were bar bopping and wound up at Jake’s. We went downstairs, got beers, and attempted to get a pool table. Unfortunately all of the tables were taken at the time. Instead the bartenders let us know that we could play Beer Pong!

So that’s what we did. They brought out this thin table and we set up our cups. Before we knew it, everyone in the bar was interested in our pseudo beer pong tournament we had running. It was pretty epic and we’ve been back ever since.

Why We Like It:

This the perfect place to hang. First you are in Old Town Pasadena, which is a perfect spot for groups. You can drink, play pool and chill on their couches. Then when you’ve had your fill and are done with the night, go upstairs and get yourself a burger or your choosing. This is a pretty solid place to check out.

Yardhouse Restaurant (Pacific Paseo)

Check out their their extensive beer menu.

Review and Overview:

  • Drinks ($$)

Happy hour here goes from 3pm to 6pm Monday through Friday and once more from 10pm to 12am Sunday through Wednesday. The drinks are decently priced, though somewhat on the higher side on it’s pricing. The Happy Hour prices here are comparable to that of most bars during normal business hours. That is one reason why we stopped frequenting the location, though to their credit they have over 100 beers on tap! It has an amazing roster that most establishments could only hope to surpass. They also have a full bar, a number of specialty drinks, all and the infamous half yard. That’s right you get a glass that is half a yard tall. It’s pretty amazing! Check out their drink menu.

  • Food ($$-$$$)

The food is is incredible! They also put some of these tasty items on their Happy Hour menu for half off the normal price. Not a bad deal. I recommend the sliders or pepperoni & mushroom pizza for Happy Hour. For normal dinner though, there are too many options. During my last visit I ordered the Surf and Turf Burger which was pretty amazing.

  • Staff

For many of our visits the staff has been friendly and attentive, with the exception of a few who were having a bad day. There is one waitress I am pretty sure swore an oath of vengeance against me because other members in my party stiffed her on the check, but that’s a story for another day.

  • Parking

Since this location is in the Paseo, parking is located in the Paseo parking garage.

  • Further Info

This is a major chain restaurant. Though you can be casual, you’ll find a lot of people coming here for dinner for meetings or after work, so a lot of people will be dressy casual. The atmosphere is bustling when it is busy, and quaint later in the evening. A great place to bring a date.

  • Website

http://www.yardhouse.com/

  • Address

330 E. Colorado Blvd, Suite 230

Pasadena, CA 91101

  • Phone

(626) 577-3486

Information:

Located in the Paseo off of Colorado, between Marengo and Los Robles, Yardhouse is next to Pacific Paseo Theaters and Cold Stone on the top most level.

Our History:

This was literally one of our first hang out spots, so there are many fond memories

Pros:

Though we do not come here much anymore, when we did we received excellent service. Some of the servers would recognize members of our group and comp our drinks from time to time. Can’t be mad at that. Also the extensive beer selection and tasty food makes this a nice place to hit for Happy Hour.

Cons:

Don’t expect to have a ridiculous time here beyond sitting with your friends during Happy Hour, Lunch, Dinner, etc. This is a still a restaurant that serves families as well as professionals.
